Perry, Matera Pursue History With AMA Performance

Guitarist Patrick Matera soulfully strummed a Gretsch White Falcon during Katy Perry’s performance of “The One That Got Away” at Sunday night’s American Music Awards, continuing a bid for Billboard Hot 100 history.

After Perry’s performance (viewed below), she was surprised by supermodel Heidi Klum and given a special achievement award for being the first female pop star with five No. 1 singles to come off one album.

Michael Jackson is the only other artist to accomplish such a feat, having notched five leaders with Bad in 1987-88.

“The One That Got Away” is the sixth single off Perry’s Teenage Dream, following “California Gurls,” “Firework,” the title track, “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).”
